Why Sydney CBD Is My Favourite Place to Shop

 

Sydney has plenty of great shopping destinations, but the CBD is my favourite place to take personal shopping clients because it offers the strongest mix of choice, convenience and quality.

Within a short walking distance, you can access department stores, Australian designers, international brands, boutiques, menswear stores, womenswear stores, shoe stores (including wide and narrow fit options), accessories, tailors and cobblers. This makes it much easier to compare options, find the right sizes and build complete outfits without spending the day travelling between suburbs or shopping centres.

For personal shopping sessions, this usually means a more focused and productive experience. We can move between stores strategically, choose pieces that work together and make decisions based on your wardrobe goals rather than whatever happens to be available in one location.

The goal is never to shop everywhere.

It’s to shop with a clear plan, visit the right stores for your style, budget and lifestyle, and find pieces that genuinely improve your wardrobe.

Best Shopping Areas in Sydney CBD

Sydney CBD is made up of several different shopping areas, each with its own strengths. Where you shop will depend on your wardrobe goals, budget, personal style and whether you’re looking for everyday pieces, workwear, occasion outfits or accessories.

  • Pitt Street Mall and Westfield Sydney are often the easiest places to begin a Sydney shopping day because they offer a wide range of brands, department stores, shoes, accessories and wardrobe staples within a compact area. It’s where I spend most of my time shopping with my clients.

    This area is useful if you want to compare different styles and price points without losing time moving between locations.

  • The Queen Victoria Building is one of Sydney’s most beautiful shopping destinations and is especially useful for more polished wardrobe additions, accessories, jewellery, beauty, shoes and gifts.

    It’s a helpful stop when you’re looking for boutiques, specialists like vintage jewellers, bra fitters, cobblers, and international luxury brands.

  • The Strand Arcade is ideal if you want to explore Australian designers, boutique stores, quality shoes, accessories and pieces that feel a little more distinctive.

    It can be especially useful for event wear, custom suiting, hats and jewellery.

  • The Galeries is a useful stop for contemporary fashion, street-wear brands like Nudie, Carhartt and Incu.

    Depending on your personal style, it can be a good place to find more modern, casual or creative wardrobe additions.

  • 25 Martin Place, formerly known as the MLC Centre, is a useful stop if you’re shopping around Martin Place or looking for more high-end designer wardrobe additions.

    It can work well for clients who need luxury clothing and accessories.

  • The Dymocks Building and St James Arcade can be useful for smaller boutiques, specialty stores, alterations, tailoring support and more specific wardrobe needs.

    These locations are not always where I’d start a general shopping day, but they can be helpful when a client needs something more specialised.

Shopping Vintage?

There's no shortage of vintage stores in Sydney. Whether it's Surry Hill's, Newtown, Enmore or Marrickville. There's a variety of vintage stores around to suit many vintage clothing lovers. If you're shopping for something unique, or looking for a one off item, Alarna's extensive contacts in the vintage fashion arena can help you find it.

  • When it comes to shopping in the city, nowhere is off-limits for my clients. Your shopping destination should depend on your unique needs. Outside of Sydney CBD, other shopping destinations I offer to clients are:

    • Bondi Junction

    • Miranda Westfield

    • Wollongong Mall

    Keep in mind that my client-only discounts and access to tailors are in Sydney CBD. I offer this destination to my clients not only for this reason, but the brands and stores in the city often have higher stock levels which limit the chance that a clothing size will be sold out.

    If you don’t mind not being able to use my full range of store and brand discounts, tailor or cobbler, we can shop where you please.

    The closest train and metro stations are listed by proximity to Pitt Street Mall:

    • Town Hall

    • St James Station

    • Martin Place

    • Wynyard

    • Central

    • Circular Quay

    • Sydney Metro: Closest stops are Gadigal & Martin Place

    Buses & Light Rail:

    There are a number of bus stops close to each train station above. But you can also catch the Sydney light rail in both directions on the following lines:

    • L2 Randwick Line between Circular Quay and Randwick via Central Station.

    • L3 Kingsford Line between Circular Quay and Juniors Kingsford via Central Station.

  • Something you’re comfortable in and is easy to change in and out of. I usually suggest slip on shoes and dresses for women, or tee’s and shorts or chinos with sneakers for men. You’ll be changing in and out of your clothing options during the session, so make it easy on yourself by not wearing too many layers.

    Additionally; consider socks and underwear, it’s best to wear colours that won’t be noticeable under what you’re trying on.
