Checks or stripes are a good place to start when you don't want to draw too much attention. Find a shirt with a small scale print or one with two colours only. Pair your shirt with a pair of jeans and add an unbuttoned jacket in a plain colour to tone down the print, if you feel you need to.
THE MIDDLE MAN
For the slightly more adventurous, try wearing a bright patterned shirt with chinos, shorts or cuffed jeans. Contrast your colours (ie; tan chinos with a navy printed shirt) a little more, and wear accessories that match the shirt such as a belt or shoes. Wear your shirt neatly tucked in or left out and rolled at the sleeves.
You don't just have to wear the patterned shirt to make a statement. Try mixing two prints and a solid colour together, like a stripe with a floral and a plain pair of pants. Mix large patterns and small patterns to make it work, and never large on large or small on small. You'll look like a real style professional if you can accentuate the patterns with complimenting ties, pocket squares, belts, hats or shoes.
